Shopping for Gem Jewelry

There are some people who will go to great lengths to find the perfect gem jewelry for a special occasion. There are shows that specialize in gem jewelry, often allowing individuals to find great deals on rings and necklaces as well as other types of jewelry in a variety of different gem stones. There are some people who make their own gem jewelry or want to have a piece of jewelry made from scratch who will buy the stones separately from the setting so that just the right stone can be chosen. Since stones can be found in different sizes and cuts, not to mention the clarity of the stone, there are times when the individual can get a much better deal doing it this way rather than purchasing a piece of jewelry where the stone is already chosen.

Get Informed

Before buying gem jewelry, people should make sure that they have all of their information straight to be certain that they are not going to be scammed. This is especially important when buying gem jewelry online since there are individuals who will sell fake gems and pass them off as the real thing. Individuals looking at gem jewelry will need to become informed about the four C’s of gems which are the color, the cut, the clarity and the carat of the gemstone. Each of these is important when pricing a stone.

The color of the gem jewelry is the first important C when shopping. The color of the stone means that the stone should look like the stone that it is. This sounds basic and it is. The stone should not be too dark to tell what color it is and thereby negate the type of stone that is being bought. For instance, there are some sapphires that are supposed to be a brilliant blue, but when bought in too dark a color, often look like the gem is black when it is in the setting.

In addition, the gem jewelry should be cut to accent the qualities of the stone. A quality cut of the gemstone can add to the brilliance of the stone, reflecting the light in such a way that it draws the viewer’s eye to the stone. The clarity of the gem jewelry also influences the price of the piece, since the stone should be clear and without flaws in it. The stone should not be too narrow or too deep, as that will not allow the light to be reflected properly in the stone. The carat weight is the last factor, as the bigger the stone and the more precious that it is considered the more it will cost.
