Practicing Jewelry with Gems
Jewelry has been popular for millennia, distinguishing people of class and showing off their riches. Recently, jewelry has become less of a career for many folks and more of a hobby for even more because the materials required to make such works of art has fallen dramatically. Of course, diamonds and the like will always be prohibitively expensive for hobbyists, but other types of gems (more properly known as gemstones), can provide an inexpensive alternative to purchasing hand crafted jewelry in popular (and very expensive stores). While you won’t be able to fashion your own diamond ring without a lot of money and training, you can create all sorts of trinkets to sell cheaply.
Birthstones and Other Uses
For each month of the year, there is a gem to signify the month of birth. In order from January to December: garnet, amethyst, aquamarine, diamond, emerald, pearl, ruby, peridot, sapphire, opal, citrine, and blue topaz. It is a popular trend in jewelry to use birthstone gems in jewelry. If a person was born in the month of March, for example, then they would more likely appreciate an aquamarine piece of jewelry. Of course, there is no set rule that says that you need to purchase a person’s birthstone, but it is one of the more popular traditions in jewelry buying today.
If you’re looking for a cheap distributor of all types of gemstones, look no further than Firemountain gems. They have been in operation for over thirty-five years, and their website boasts more than seventy-eight thousand different decorative items to choose from. If you buy in bulk, you can get even better savings. Buying a single 6×4mm blue topaz costs $5.70, but purchasing two hundred or more of them lowers the price per gem to a cheap $2.69. Therefore, you can make a lot of money if you purchase them in bulk quantities to sell at craft fairs and the like, and you can make a respectable profit.
With so many thousands of different gems to choose from, it can be difficult to really decide which ones you want to use. Instead of just choosing a few, you might want to dabble in a number of different gemstones before narrowing down your focus. It’s so hard to figure out how beautiful a gem is just from looking at pictures of it in a catalog, so picking up a number of them just to test out can help you not only diversify but also give you great practice at creating your very own jewelry.
