Very Rare Black Diamonds

Diamonds are a stone that not only are people interested in for jewelry, but they are also known to have legends about them. Certain colored diamonds have been known to carry curses and stories abound about these unique stones. One of the most common stories involves a blue diamond and the curse that follows it, the Hope diamond is very well known. There are other colored stones though, that also carry their own legends including one about a black diamond.

Black Diamonds

One very famous diamond is a black diamond known as the Black Orlov. Black diamonds are extremely rare and this one has its own story. The legend says that this stone was stolen from a Hindu shrine in southern India.

The story states that a monk removed the stone from the eye of the idol Brahma. By doing so, the stone was cursed to cause a violent death to whoever owned the stone.

The next stage of the story involves two princesses who had both owned the stone. Apparently both women jumped to their deaths at separate times and months apart. Add to this the fact that the man that was the diamonds dealer also jumped to his death and pretty soon the story was out that this particular black diamond was cursed. In order to stop the curse, the original stone was cut into three separate diamonds and sold off.

One of the stones was set into a necklace and the current owner seems to have escaped the curse and has allowed for the necklace to go on tour through many museums around the world. The story of course brings people in to see this black diamond that seems to have a curse.

Black diamonds are so very rare that they are only found in Brazil and central African mines. Black diamonds are also porous which has baffled scientists. Black diamonds are an intriguing puzzle that scientists have been attempting to unravel. Recently they have begun analyzing the make up of a black diamond.

Because of where these diamonds are found and the fact that they seem to be different from traditional diamonds, some scientists are beginning to wonder if they are made from an asteroid that crashed to earth millions of years ago.

Black diamonds can be re-created in a synthetic form, but they are still very expensive. Since black diamonds are so rare, they are hard to locate and a consumer will be paying a high price tag for these unique stones.
